The Types of Voyaguers and the routes they take are...
There are many types of voyaguers and the routes they take are specific to the company they are in. The first type of
voyaguer is the "Pork Eaters" they are the voyaguers who travel between Montreal and Grand Portage. They use the biggest canoes
out of all of the voyaguers ; the Montreal Canoe. Next is the Hivernants , these guys travel up past Grand Portage and up
into the smaller rivers. They use the smaller canoes called the North Canoe because they are going through
the smaller rivers within Minnesota to deliver good to the tribes. Then there is the Avant or the Bowman he is in a group
called the Bouts wich are the people in the front and back of the canoes. The Steersman is next, what more do I need to say
he is the guy in the back of the canoes who "steers" the canoe. Then there is the Solo he is the guy in the back of the boat
who starts a good song to paddle to. Then there is the middlemen , they are the peoplw , in the middle who power the canoe.
They usually paddle for around 14-18 hours a day usually starting around 4:00 am. To make things harder they even paddle at
a stoke-a-second pace. Lastly the routes they take are usually the same from year to year. The canoes brigades meet at hat
point towards the end of the canoeing to freshen up and get all clean for Grand Portage the next day. To sum things up the
canoemen work very hard from day to day and have routes they follow from year to year with little variables.
