The Three Types of Canoes...
Some of the canoes usd by the voyaguers and the Indians are the Montreal Canoe the Northern Canoe and the Ojibway
Canoe. The first but the largest is the Montreal Canoe it is 30-40 feet long can hold from 8-16 people and weighs
around 600 pounds! This boat can hold up to 8000 pounds in goods and voyaguers, usually used for fur trade between Grand Portage
and areas east of that such as Montreal, and Lachine. The next canoe but not the last is the North Canoe , it
is around 18-22 feet long and can hold from 2-6 people and weighs about 300 pounds ; half of what the Montreal Canoe weighs.
This canoe can hold around 3000 pounds of goods and can manuaver through smaller rivers north west of Grand Portage.
Hivernants usually use this type of canoe in the nothern indian areas to deliver the goods brought to Grand Portage.
The last and the smallest canoe is the Ojibway Canoe , it can support about 2 people and is 12 feet long. This canoe is only
about 200 pounds but can still carry around 2000 pounds of goods and people. To conclude these canoes are used in a variety
of places and are very different from one another.
